150 Celebrations

17th May 2022

On Friday November 16th 2018 O'Brennan National School celebrated its 150th  year to the day in existence. Its fair to say that as an educational establishment it has been quite the journey from that hedge school on Costello's land in the mid 19th century to the present.

It was only fitting therefore that entire school community both past and present would mark this special occasion on the above date and needless to say a wonderful morning was had. Fr. Gearóid said some words of welcome to all gathered in our school hall and then led a short prayer service. The pupils of O'Brennan sang songs, read prayers of the faithful, brought forward gifts that encapsulated school life in O'Brennan over 150 years,  read out some rules for teachers in 1915, and made predictions about what the future might hold for O'Brennan. Our school choir then performed 'We're Proud of Our School.' Mr. O'Leary (former principal) then addressed the crowd and spoke about O'Brennan's proud history, its positive contribution to the local community, and why our school should look to the future with optimism.

The current pupils then performed a three part drama sketch entitled '150th Showtime Sketch' which everyone present enjoyed immensely for the performances of our pupils, their skills on stage and of course their humour.

When the ceremony concluded guests were served with tea, coffee and light refreshments, and were afforded the opportunity to mingle with one another and reminisce. Those in attendance were also given the chance to tour our new school building as well as examine the old roll-books, the timelines and the predictions that were all on display.
